The Study Skills Advantage

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation reports in its publication, “With Their Whole Lives Ahead of Them,” that almost 50% of students surveyed felt overwhelmed by the amount of materials they are required to study. Many college students lack essential skills in effective studying that are needed for academic success. Students are not measured by the length of time spent in front of a book or by the number of practice exercises they complete. Therefore the more efficient they are, the less overwhelmed they will feel.
“The so-called smart students are not the ones with higher IQs. They are the students who have mastered the art of studying efficiently.”
Study skills enable students to learn effectively and retain the information learned however they don’t always come easily or naturally. The best teachers may incorporate note taking and time management into their classes but these skills are not formally taught in all schools.
Investing in your teen’s university or college education provides the building blocks needed for a successful career. We are here to provide the foundation for that education by teaching them how to learn effectively and efficiently. By dedicating one week to learning how to learn, your teen will develop essential learning techniques and build useful strategies and habits. They will learn how to digest difficult material, how to avoid procrastination, and how to take ownership of their learning. Study skills are not subject specific; they can be used in any discipline and are important transferrable life skills. Your teen will be well prepared for university’s demanding workload.
